Come to me and I will give you rest

by | Divine Invitation to grace and freedom, Chapter 10

There is a promise made to everyone that will come to Jesus. When you open your heart, the Lord will come in and dine with you. When you come to Him, He will give you rest.

God is not a man that He should lie or make a promise that He will not fulfil.  If it were someone else that made the promise, we might have some reasons to have doubt, but if Jesus says, I will give you rest, we should rest assured that He will do it as He has promised.

God will never fail to do His part by fulfilling His promises if we will do ours, by coming to Him.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 KJV

…and I will give you rest.

This is not a probability. The Lord doesn’t say …and I may give you rest. He says, “…and I will give you rest”.

Rest in Christ is not uncertain if we will come to Him. The one who makes the promise does not need anyone to give Him permission or approval before he can set you free.

He does not need to consult any other person before He can give you rest. He already has the rest with him. In fact, He is the rest. That’s why the bible says if the Son sets you free you will be free indeed. John 8:36.

The rest Jesus is talking about is nothing less than peace, freedom, deliverance, breakthrough, joy, etc. There’s no way to access the real peace outside Jesus, the prince of peace.

You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. Do you want to have freedom from the oppression of the devil? Come to Jesus and get your freedom.

On mount Zion, there shall be deliverance. Mount Zion signifies Christ. When you come to Christ, deliverance is certain.

Remember in the presence of God there is fullness of joy. Do you want to be a beneficiary of joy unspeakable? Turn to Jesus. Every good thing in life is a gift from the Lord.

There is no alternative, only Jesus has the real peace and real rest and only He can give it. You cannot find peace in any religion, religion founders, gods or goddesses.

Some idols may seem to be giving their followers rest but when you give it a close look you will discover that the so-called rest is nothing but a heavy and afflicting yoke around the neck of their ignorant victims.

All workers are paid either wages or salaries but they have to work, sometimes very hard, to get their pay. Also when you come to Christ you will get your pay; you will get your reward.

Your reward is the real rest. You don’t need any external effort, you don’t need any manual labour, you don’t need any struggle, all you need to qualify for the real rest is to come to Jesus.

I wonder why some people take this simplicity for granted. What does it cost you to come? What does it cost you to believe the finished work of Calvary? Nothing!

You don’t need to argue, you don’t need to waste your time. It is the Lord calling you. By Him, you were created and He says, come I will give you rest.

If a poor man on the street promises to build you a mansion, I am so sure you will ask him to show you his own house. A man who is not sure of his eternal home cannot by any means give you assurance of a place in heaven.

Only Jesus, the prince of peace, can give you the rest you desire. Only the living God can give you life, and Jesus is alive till eternity. Only the way, the truth and the life can give you all you need to succeed on earth and prosper in heaven.

and I will give you rest… And you will find rest…

There are two kinds of rest Jesus talks about in Matthew 11:28-29. Come to me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest…. for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. NKJV.

The first is given and the second is found. I’ll talk about the first here and the second later.

It is of Christ’s responsibility to offer this rest to those who come to him. This rest cannot be earned or gained. Invariably, it is given by the Lord and Savior through pardon and reconciliation.

This is the rest that sets us free and distinguishes us in this world. This is not a rest that comes to people after many fasting and prayer or after some other spiritual exercises, it is the rest we receive the moment we come to the Lord in faith.

…and I will give you rest. Notice, Christ is the one to give you the rest,

…and I will give you rest. What does that mean? It means the Lord is saying, “don’t worry, there’s no limitation. No matter how troubled you have been; regardless of how many problems you have to solve; it doesn’t matter how long you have lived in sin, as long as you can come, I (Jesus) will give you rest.

Even if you have been wounded, come and I will heal your wounds. Maybe your heart is broken, just come and I will put your broken heart together.

What manner of man is Jesus! Not even our limitations, challenges and problems can debar Him from helping us!

Come to him today, obtain your rest in Him, and let Him set you free. He is set to set you free.

Let Christ free you from worry and anxiety, from every form of fear and cares of this life. Let Him have His way in your heart.

He will bind up your broken heart, heal your wounded soul, carry your burden, break your yoke, and give you beauty for ashes, joy instead of mourning, a garment of praise instead of the spirit of heaviness, dancing instead of crying. Just come today.
